American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representative Shomari Figures as a Federal Champion

As Alabama faces stronger storms and more frequent flooding, Congressman Figures commits to leading on solutions that advance resilience and strengthen disaster preparedness for communities across the state.

WASHINGTON, DC — June 24, 2026 — The American Flood Coalition (AFC) today recognized Congressman Shomari Figures (AL) as a Federal Champion for his leadership, public service, and commitment to finding solutions to challenges posed by flooding.

“My district is no stranger to natural disasters and the immense damage that can be caused by flooding,” said Congressman Figures. “That’s why I’ve worked hard to strengthen our flood and storm resistance and work across the aisle to make sure communities in my district stay safe and prepared.”

Congressman Figures joins 55 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to combatting the effects of stronger storms and more frequent flooding. As the first Federal Champion from Alabama, Congressman Figures brings a career in federal public service and a strong record of supporting bipartisan resilience policy proposals to this work.

“Congressman Figures understands the value of proactive flood resilience before storms arrive,” said Melissa Roberts, AFC Founder and Executive Director. “His leadership to sustain much-needed federal investment in critical infrastructure and nature-based solutions that buffer communities from disasters, as well as his continued focus on delivering bipartisan FEMA reform, affirm his dedication to serving flood-impacted communities in Congress.”

As a member of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure and its Subcommittee on Economic Development, Public Buildings, and Emergency Management, Congressman Figures oversees federal disaster preparedness and emergency management programs. He has also prioritized federal investment in the National Estuaries Program in order to enhance water quality and flood resilience of Mobile Bay and coastal waterways across the Gulf Coast.
