American Flood Coalition Recognizes Senator Joni Ernst as a Federal Champion

As Iowa faces stronger storms and more frequent flooding, Sen. Ernst commits to leading on flood solutions.

WASHINGTON, DC — June 18, 2024 — The American Flood Coalition (AFC) today recognized Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) as a Federal Champion for her leadership, public service, and commitment to finding solutions to challenges posed by flooding.

“Iowans have shown tremendous grit and resilience in the face of major floods, and we need to continue promoting policies that ensure our homes, businesses, farms, and infrastructure can withstand these threats today and into the future,” said Sen. Ernst. “I’m honored to be recognized as a Federal Champion by the American Flood Coalition for my longstanding efforts to deliver commonsense solutions to flooding that will protect our state for generations to come.”

Sen. Ernst joins 42 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to stronger storms, more frequent flooding, and higher seas. Sen. Ernst is the third Federal Champion from the Hawkeye State, joining Reps. Ashley Hinson and Zach Nunn.

“Over the last decade, Senator Ernst has brought a common-sense, forward-looking approach to tackling flooding in the U.S. Senate,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director of the American Flood Coalition. “Whether enacting policy to ensure our infrastructure and planning reflect robust, accurate federal data, or through her leadership on flood-resilient agriculture for Iowa’s farms, Senator Ernst is a tremendous addition to our growing roster of Federal Champions in Iowa.”

Throughout her service in public office and as a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Iowa National Guard, Sen. Ernst has prioritized making Iowa communities more resilient against flooding and extreme weather. She has led efforts to empower Iowa farmers to effectively steward their lands while protecting crops and livestock from floods.

Sen. Ernst has also supported efforts to deliver robust federal flood data to drive smart infrastructure investments and planning, including as a cosponsor of the 2022 Flood Level Observation, Operations, and Decision Support (FLOODS) Act. This bipartisan law directs NOAA to deliver nationwide rainfall data at least every decade, establishes a national integrated flood information system, and enhances forecasting and communication of floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes.
