American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representative Randy Weber as a Federal Champion

As Texas faces stronger storms and rising sea levels, Rep. Weber commits to leading on flood solutions.

WASHINGTON, DC — June 20, 2024 — The American Flood Coalition (AFC) today recognized Representative Randy Weber (R-TX) as a Federal Champion for his leadership, public service, and commitment to finding solutions to challenges posed by flooding.

“Southeast Texas has endured devastating flooding over the years, making it imperative that we protect the families, businesses, and communities along our coast,” said Rep. Weber. “As a proud Federal Champion, I am committed to building resiliency along the Gulf Coast. It’s not a matter of ‘if’ there will be another storm, but ‘when.'”

Rep. Weber joins 43 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to stronger storms, more frequent flooding, and higher seas. Rep. Weber is the sixth Federal Champion from the Lone Star State, joining Reps. Michael Burgess, Dan Crenshaw, Lizzie Fletcher, Vincente Gonzalez, and Al Green.

“For over a decade in Congress, Representative Weber has prioritized and strengthened the resilience of the Gulf Coast,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director of the American Flood Coalition. “Given his longtime leadership on smart federal investments to protect communities along the coast, and his work to ensure these places recover from major hurricanes and storms with greater resilience, we welcome Representative Weber as a Federal Champion.”

Rep. Weber’s district stretches from Freeport to Orange, including the greater Galveston region. The district has experienced frequent impacts from hurricanes and tropical storms, including significant damage from Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Throughout his tenure in Congress, Rep. Weber has championed investments in flood resilient infrastructure, including the so-called “Ike Dike,” a comprehensive U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project to protect Texas’s Gulf Coast from storm surges.

Through his position on the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology,  Rep. Weber has advanced policy to provide robust federal flood data, including the 2022 Flood Level Observation, Operations, and Decision Support (FLOODS) Act. This bipartisan law directs NOAA to update nationwide rainfall data at least every decade, establishes a national integrated flood information system, and enhances forecasting and communication of floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes.
