American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representative Chuck Edwards as a Federal Champion
As North Carolina faces stronger storms, Rep. Edwards commits to leading on flood solutions.
WASHINGTON, DC — June 26, 2024 — The American Flood Coalition (AFC) today recognized Representative Chuck Edwards (R-NC) as a Federal Champion for his leadership, public service, and commitment to finding solutions to challenges posed by flooding.
“Flooding is a statewide issue for North Carolina — severe storms and major floods threaten businesses, neighborhoods, and the overall well-being of constituents in our state’s western mountain towns,” said Rep. Edwards. “I’m pleased to work with the American Flood Coalition on effective strategies to build greater resilience and make proactive investments to keep our wonderful communities and citizens safe.”
Rep. Edwards joins 44 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to stronger storms, more frequent flooding, and higher seas. Rep. Edwards is the seventh Federal Champion from the Tarheel State, joining Sens. Ted Budd and Thom Tillis, as well as Reps. Don Davis, Virginia Foxx, Greg Murphy, and David Rouzer.
“As a highly effective North Carolina state senator and now as a member of Congress, Representative Edwards brings valuable insight and experience solving the varied flooding challenges across Western North Carolina,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director of the American Flood Coalition. “We are thrilled to recognize Rep. Edwards as a Federal Champion for his leadership to deliver federal solutions and investments for communities in North Carolina’s mountains and beyond.”
North Carolina’s 11th Congressional District spans fifteen counties and covers most of the western part of the state. Western North Carolina has experienced increasingly catastrophic flooding in recent years. In August 2021, Tropical Storm Fred caused flash floods in Canton, causing six casualties and destroying homes and much of the city’s infrastructure.
As a member of the powerful House Committee on Appropriations, Rep. Edwards has prioritized smart investments to build resilience while conserving taxpayer resources needed in the wake of major flood disasters. He has also led efforts to bolster dam safety and better equip state and local emergency managers as they carry out rescues during flood events.
