American Flood Coalition Recognizes Senator Chuck Grassley as a Federal Champion

As Iowa faces stronger storms and more frequent flooding, Sen. Grassley commits to leading on flood solutions.

WASHINGTON, DC — August 7, 2024 — The American Flood Coalition (AFC) today recognized Senator Chuck Grassley (IA) as a Federal Champion for his leadership, public service, and commitment to finding solutions to challenges posed by flooding.

“While Iowans are no strangers to severe weather, the significant damage from recent flooding across our state underscores the importance of weather preparedness. As a lifelong family farmer, I’ve seen firsthand how commonsense steps, like supporting flood resilient infrastructure and adding buffer strips to fields, can better protect our communities in the event of major storms,” said Senator Grassley. “I’ll continue working to ensure the safety and resiliency of Iowa communities for generations to come.”

Sen. Grassley joins 46 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to stronger storms and more frequent flooding. Sen. Grassley is the fifth Federal Champion from the Hawkeye State, joining Sen. Joni Ernst, as well as Reps. Ashley Hinson, Marionette Miller-Meeks, and Zach Nunn.

“Over his tremendous tenure serving Iowans in elected office, Senator Grassley has consistently championed flood resilience at the federal level,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director of the American Flood Coalition. “His leadership and insight will be invaluable as we work to achieve transformational adaptation in rural America and nationwide.”

In the 118th Congress, Senator Grassley serves as Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee, where he lifts up the needs of communities preparing for and recovering from floods through smart investments and practical solutions that save taxpayer dollars. He also championed the bipartisan infrastructure law, which has delivered once-in-a-generation funding to build roads, bridges, water systems, and other infrastructure for the future.

As a working farmer and member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, Senator Grassley has  prioritized agricultural policies that empower farmers to reduce flooding. For the last several years, AFC has led a pilot in Iowa to show how multi-cropping — an agriculture practice in which farmers plant different crops with overlapping growing seasons in the same field — reduces flooding in a cost-effective way.
