As Maryland faces stronger storms, higher seas, and more frequent flooding, Rep. Elfreth commits to leading on flood solutions.
WASHINGTON, DC — January 16, 2024 — The American Flood Coalition (AFC) today recognized Representative Sarah Elfreth (D-MD-03) as a Federal Champion for her leadership, public service, and commitment to finding solutions to challenges posed by flooding.
“From City Dock in Annapolis to Main Street in Historic Ellicott City, Maryland’s Third District is far too familiar with the devastating impacts of flooding,” said Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth. “As a proud AFC member during my service in the Maryland Senate, and now as a Federal Champion, I am committed to building on my work at the State level to advance effective federal policy to help tackle our nation’s growing flood risks and the dangers posed by climate change.”
Rep. Elfreth joins 50 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to stronger storms and more frequent flooding. Rep. Elfreth is the first Federal Champion from the Old Line State, the only member from Maryland, and the first to receive this honor in the 119th Congress.
“A leading voice for watershed-scale flood resilience during her time as a highly-effective state senator, Representative Elfreth is a phenomenal addition to AFC’s strong bipartisan roster of Federal Champions,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director, American Flood Coalition. “Her leadership on behalf of the Chesapeake Bay and deep knowledge of regional resilience and adaptation strategies will no doubt help advance our work in the 119th Congress.”
During her tenure in the Maryland State Senate representing the City of Annapolis and southern Anne Arundel County, Rep. Elfreth secured millions in funding for proactive infrastructure investments. She also served as one of two state senators representing Maryland on the multi-state Chesapeake Bay Commission.
Maryland’s 3rd congressional district has experienced significant impacts from flooding given its coastal location on Chesapeake Bay. The district comprises Anne Arundel, Howard, and Carroll Counties and also includes Annapolis.
