The American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representatives Greg Murphy and David Rouzer as Federal Champions

As North Carolina communities face more severe storms, higher tides, and more frequent flooding, Reps. Murphy and Rouzer commit to leading on innovative strategies that address flooding and sea level rise.

WASHINGTON, DC — October 5, 2021 — The American Flood Coalition (AFC) today announced that Reps. Greg Murphy (R-NC) and David Rouzer (R-NC) have been recognized as Federal Champions, a recognition for leaders who are passionate about advancing national solutions to higher seas, stronger storms, and more frequent flooding.

This announcement comes ahead of Rep. Murphy and Rep. Rouzer’s Water Adaptation to Ensure Regional Success (WATERS) Summit on October 13, 2021. This summit will convene federal, state, and local leaders, as well as stakeholders including AFC, to discuss water and flooding issues in North Carolina.

“While Eastern North Carolina is home to incredible coastal resources, our communities remain vulnerable to the impacts of flooding, storms, and other extreme weather,” said Congressman Greg Murphy. “I thank the American Flood Coalition for recognizing me as a Federal Champion and will continue to push for common sense steps that fortify our district from future floods.”

“Many communities in North Carolina have experienced devastating inland and coastal flooding due to major storm events on numerous occasions,” said Congressman David Rouzer.  “As a longtime advocate for helping these communities recover from major hurricanes and flooding, I am humbled to be recognized as a Federal Champion by the American Flood Coalition.  I look forward to continuing to work on innovative solutions that protect Southeastern North Carolina from flood risk.”

Congressman Murphy and Congressman Rouzer are AFC’s first Federal Champions from North Carolina. The Congressmen are the latest additions to this distinguished group, which includes 24 bipartisan Federal Champions from 10 states.

“We are honored to recognize Representatives Greg Murphy and David Rouzer as our first Federal Champions from North Carolina, a state that is unfortunately all too familiar with the devastating impacts of flooding,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director of the American Flood Coalition. “We look forward to both Congressman Murphy and Congressman Rouzer’s continued leadership on behalf of families, business owners, and communities along North Carolina’s coastline, and to working together to advance policies that ensure a stronger and more resilient future for all.”

Congressman Murphy and Congressman Rouzer are dedicated to finding proactive, innovative solutions that address the impacts of flooding and sea level rise and build resilience from the ground up. Their unique perspectives, vision, and policy expertise will bolster AFC’s work  on behalf of its 270 members, including 22 members from North Carolina.
