As Indiana faces stronger storms and more frequent flooding, Rep. Houchin commits to leading on solutions that advance flood resilience and strengthen disaster preparedness for communities across the state.
WASHINGTON, DC — July 28, 2026 — The American Flood Coalition (AFC) today recognized Representative Erin Houchin (IN) as a Federal Champion for her leadership, public service, and commitment to finding solutions to challenges posed by flooding.
“Flooding is a serious challenge for many communities across Indiana’s Ninth District, especially those along the Ohio River,” said Representative Houchin. “I’ve worked closely with local leaders to improve infrastructure and flood mitigation efforts, and have secured federal funding for stormwater projects in communities like Madison, Austin, and Clarksville. I’m proud to partner with the American Flood Coalition to help protect lives and reduce the impact of future flooding.”
Representative Houchin joins 56 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to combatting the effects of stronger storms and more frequent flooding. As the first Federal Champion from the Hoosier State, Rep. Houchin brings her record of investing in flood resilience along the Ohio River and improving disaster recovery for southern Indiana communities to this work.
“Having served southern Indiana communities throughout her career, Rep. Houchin brings a common-sense perspective to building safer, more resilient cities and towns along the Ohio River,” said Melissa Roberts, AFC Founder and Executive Director. “Her leadership to secure resources for flood-ready infrastructure projects, invest in natural infrastructure that bolsters flood resilience, and reform federal programs so communities can rebuild stronger will inform her continued work as a Federal Champion.”
In her capacity as Co-Chair of the bipartisan Ohio River Caucus, Rep. Houchin has supported Ohio River basin restoration efforts to reduce flood risk, support farmers, fuel local economies, and enhance local watersheds. Among other federal investments, Rep. Houchin has spearheaded projects to reduce flooding and improve water quality in Madison, Indiana.
