American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representative Wesley Hunt as a Federal Champion

As Texas faces stronger storms and higher seas, Rep. Hunt commits to leading on smart, proactive flood solutions.

WASHINGTON, DC — December 18, 2024 — The American Flood Coalition today recognized Representative Wesley Hunt (R-TX) as a Federal Champion for his leadership, public service, and commitment to finding solutions to challenges posed by flooding.

“As a born and raised Houstonian, I have long seen the disastrous effects flooding has across our state and my hometown,” said Rep. Hunt. “Tackling the disastrous effects of flooding has been a top priority for me in Congress and I look forward to continuing this work as an American Flood Coalition Federal Champion.”

Rep. Hunt joins 51 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to stronger storms, more frequent flooding, and higher seas. Rep. Hunt is the seventh Federal Champion from the Lone Star State, joining Reps. Michael Burgess, Dan Crenshaw, Lizzie Fletcher, Vincente Gonzalez, Al Green, and Randy Weber.

“Whether serving as a U.S. Army Captain or in the House of Representatives, Representative Hunt has long been dedicated to protecting people from growing threats,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director of the American Flood Coalition. “Since coming to Congress, Rep. Hunt has made flooding a top priority, pushing for policy and investments to ensure Houston, other Gulf Coast communities, and the rest of the country are better prepared for the next storm.”

Encompassing parts of Harris County, Texas’s 38th Congressional District has experienced significant impacts from flooding, most recently from Hurricane Beryl. Its residents endured severe flooding and related destruction from Hurricane Harvey, one of the most catastrophic and costliest storms in U.S. history.

Representative Hunt has spearheaded efforts to help Texas communities better prepare and respond to flooding, including securing funding for six projects aimed at improving outdated stormwater and wastewater systems to be more flood resilient and improve water quality. He has also partnered with members of the Houston delegation on flood priorities, such as a bipartisan provision to  complete a flood resiliency study as part of the Water Resources Development Act of 2024 with fellow AFC Federal Champion Rep. Lizzie Fletcher.
