American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representative Vicente Gonzalez as a Federal Champion

As Texas communities face higher seas, stronger storms, and more frequent flooding, Rep. Gonzalez commits to driving solutions that build flood resilience.

WASHINGTON, DC — April 18, 2023 — The American Flood Coalition (AFC) today recognized Representative Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) as a Federal Champion for his leadership, public service, and commitment to delivering swift responses and recovery funding to flood disasters.

“South Texans know all too well the carnage that major storms and flooding can leave in their wake,” said Representative Gonzalez. “I am grateful to be recognized as an AFC Federal Champion as I share the organization’s commonsense approach to defending lives and livelihoods from more frequent and intense hurricanes, storms, and flooding through robust data, proactive planning, and sound investments in resilience.”

Rep. Gonzalez joins 34 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to higher seas, stronger storms, and more frequent flooding. Rep. Gonzalez is AFC’s fifth Federal Champion from Texas, joining Reps. Dan Crenshaw, Lizzie Fletcher, Al Green, and Michael Burgess, M.D, from the Lone Star State.

“As our coalition of municipalities, counties, local officials, business and civic groups, and state leaders expands across Texas, we are thrilled to welcome Representative Gonzalez as an outstanding addition to AFC’s roster of Federal Champions,” said Melissa Roberts, AFC’s Executive Director. “Congressman Gonzalez understands the needs and challenges of those on the front lines of flood risk and will be an integral partner in our work to enact proactive flood solutions.”

As a member of the House Committee on Financial Services, Rep. Gonzalez oversees the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). He has led proposals to enhance NFIP processes for repeatedly flooded properties, and to ensure accurate and complete flood maps that underlie the program.
