AFC Hosts Southeastern North Carolina Resilience Tour
The nonpartisan coalition convened over 30 local leaders and state agency representatives to tour prominent resilience projects in the Wilmington area four years after Hurricane Florence.
WILMINGTON, NC — September 15, 2022 — The American Flood Coalition today hosted local leaders and state agency representatives on a tour of ongoing resilience projects throughout Southeastern North Carolina.
This event, four years after Hurricane Florence battered the region, highlighted the achievements of the state agencies and legislature in recent and ongoing investments in resilience, including a dam project in Boiling Spring Lakes, a stream debris removal project in Burgaw, and bridge improvements in Brunswick County.
“Four years ago, Hurricane Florence showed the devastating impacts of flooding on communities across Southeastern North Carolina,” said AFC Carolinas Director Tony McEwen. “Since then, the state has made resilience a priority, as seen in sweeping infrastructure projects and improvements, all of which will help communities better prepare for and recover from extreme weather.”
Joined by AFC were members of the Eastern North Carolina Recovery & Resilience Alliance, representatives of the Environmental Defense Fund, key leaders from state agencies, and dozens of local leaders.
“We’re still recovering from the impacts of Hurricane Florence, so this resilience tour is beyond helpful,” said Olivia Dawson, mayor of Burgaw, North Carolina. “As mayor, it’s critical to collaborate with and learn from state experts and local leaders about challenges, innovations, and strategies to build resilience throughout our region.”
