American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representative Russell Fry as a Federal Champion
As South Carolina faces stronger storms and rising sea levels, Rep. Fry commits to leading on smart, proactive flood solutions.
WASHINGTON, DC — June 13, 2023 — The American Flood Coalition today recognized Representative Russell Fry (R-SC) as a Federal Champion for his leadership, public service, and commitment to finding solutions to challenges posed by flooding.
“With some South Carolinians still recovering from the impacts of Hurricanes Florence and Matthew, the need for effective leadership to better defend against major storms and floods is clear,” said Representative Fry. “In partnership with the American Flood Coalition’s dozens of members across South Carolina and allies in Congress, I am eager to work together to deliver innovative flood adaptation solutions.”
Rep. Fry joins 35 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to stronger storms, more frequent flooding, and higher seas. He joins South Carolina Senator Tim Scott and Congresswoman Nancy Mace who have also been recognized as Federal Champions for their leadership on behalf of the Palmetto State.
“As a lifelong South Carolinian and longtime public servant for coastal communities, Representative Fry recognizes the need for proactive strategies to protect residents, businesses, and critical infrastructure from floods,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director, American Flood Coalition. “His insights from serving Horry County and other flood-vulnerable areas will enhance AFC’s continued work with leaders in South Carolina and Congress to build flood resilience across the state and nationwide.”
A native of Surfside Beach, South Carolina, Representative Fry served in the South Carolina General Assembly during both Hurricanes Florence and Matthew, which brought catastrophic flooding and damages to communities in his district.
As a member of the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, Representative Fry is poised to lead proposals that would strengthen and streamline federal disaster programs, conserve taxpayer resources through more thoughtful planning efforts, and help communities and residents more effectively defend against and rebuild from floods.
