American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representative Mikie Sherrill as a Federal Champion

As New Jersey communities face stronger and more frequent storms, Rep. Sherrill commits to leading on innovative strategies that address flooding and sea level rise.

WASHINGTON, DC — March 28, 2023 — The American Flood Coalition today announced that Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) has been named a Federal Champion, in alignment with the nonpartisan, national alliance dedicated to advancing proactive solutions to frequent flooding, stronger storms, and rising seas.

“It is an honor to be recognized as a Federal Champion by the American Flood Coalition, who is critical to our work to protect lives, homes, and neighborhoods in New Jersey’s 11th District and throughout the nation by mitigating the risk of flooding and damage from natural disasters,” said Rep. Sherrill. “Last Congress, I championed and helped two common-sense bills become law, which are now working to improve forecasting and communication of extreme weather events. I look forward to continuing to work with the American Flood Coalition to ensure our communities have the resources they need to prevent flooding.”

Rep. Sherrill is the 31st Federal Champion recognized by the American Flood Coalition and the first to represent New Jersey. She joins a growing group of lawmakers in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives whose designation as a Federal Champion recognizes their commitment to finding proactive solutions to the challenges posed by flooding.

“Representative Sherrill has been a steadfast proponent of forward-looking, data-driven solutions to flooding,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director of the American Flood Coalition. “During her tenure as Chair of the House Space, Science, and Technology’s Environment Subcommittee in the 117th Congress, Representative Sherill was instrumental in introducing and shepherding the bipartisan FLOODS and PRECIP Acts into law. By modernizing federal precipitation data, these urgently needed laws will empower cities and towns in New Jersey and beyond to make informed investments in flood-resilient infrastructure.”

By working to improve forecasting and public awareness and alerts about floods, Representative Sherrill has demonstrated her commitment to practical and proactive flood preparedness. As a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of the House Armed Services Committee, Representative Sherrill also recognizes that flood resilience on military bases is a matter of national security. The American Flood Coalition looks forward to partnering with her in advancing flood solutions throughout the Mid-Atlantic, benefitting dozens of the Coalition’s members along the East Coast.
