American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representative Jim Himes as a Federal Champion
As Connecticut communities face higher seas, stronger storms, and more frequent flooding, Rep. Jim Himes commits to driving solutions to build resilience.
WASHINGTON, DC — March 21, 2023 — The American Flood Coalition today recognized Representative Jim Himes (D-CT) as a Federal Champion for his leadership, public service, and commitment to delivering proactive solutions to the challenges posed by flooding and other natural hazards.
“As deadly and destructive storms become our new normal, it is imperative we work to protect vulnerable coastal neighborhoods from future devastation,” said Representative Himes. “Investing in flood resilience is crucial to protecting homeowners and businesses in Southwest Connecticut, and to the health and longevity of our coastal communities. I look forward to working with the American Flood Coalition on efforts to mitigate the effects of flooding and build infrastructure resilient enough to withstand future disasters.”
Rep. Himes joins 29 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to stronger storms, more frequent flooding, and rising seas. As the first Federal Champion from Connecticut, Rep. Himes reflects his district’s unique geographic perspective to protect the state and its vulnerable coastlines.
“Through his expertise in housing and infrastructure policy, commitment to robust community engagement, and track record of passing bipartisan legislation, Representative Himes has proven himself as an outstanding leader on solutions to flooding and sea level rise,” said Melissa Roberts, AFC’s Executive Director. “With Representative Himes’s leadership, we can continue to build resilience among communities in Connecticut and across the country.”
As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, Rep. Himes has championed efforts to help communities build flood-resilient infrastructure and prepare for major storms such as Hurricane Ida and Superstorm Sandy. He has also focused on helping communities in his district and nationwide recover with greater resilience in the wake of catastrophic floods.
