American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representative Jennifer McClellan as a Federal Champion

As Virginia faces stronger storms, Rep. McClellan commits to leading on smart, proactive flood solutions.

WASHINGTON, DC — March 28, 2024 — The American Flood Coalition (AFC) today recognized Representative Jennifer McClellan (D-VA) as a Federal Champion for her leadership, public service, and commitment to finding solutions to challenges posed by flooding.

“Flooding, severe storms, and sea level rise all threaten Virginians’ homes, neighborhoods, and businesses, as well as critical infrastructure and military installations throughout the Chesapeake Bay,” said Rep. McClellan. “As a Federal Champion, I look forward to working with the American Flood Coalition on effective strategies to address these risks and build a safer, more resilient future for my district, Virginia, and communities nationwide.”

Rep. McClellan joins 40 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to stronger storms, more frequent flooding, and higher seas. Rep. McClellan is the third Federal Champion from the commonwealth, joining Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Bobby Scott.

As successor to the late Rep. Donald McEachin, who was also an AFC Federal Champion, Rep. McClellan carries on his legacy of building thriving, equitable, and flood-resilient communities in Virginia and beyond.

“As a longtime leader in Virginia’s legislature, and now at the federal level, Rep. McClellan recognizes the challenge of flooding, as well as the opportunity to deliver solutions,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director of the American Flood Coalition. “AFC looks forward to deepening our partnership with the Congresswoman on ensuring military readiness against flooding, improving federal programs and processes, and delivering forward-looking data for both state and local planning.”

Rep. McClellan represents Virginia’s 4th Congressional District, which includes the city of Richmond and areas south to the Commonwealth’s border with North Carolina. The district and broader Hampton Roads region face considerable flood risk from both higher sea levels and increasingly extreme precipitation.
