American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representative Don Davis as a Federal Champion

As North Carolina faces stronger storms and rising sea levels, Rep. Davis commits to leading on innovative, proactive flood solutions.

WASHINGTON, DC — September 12, 2023 — The American Flood Coalition today recognized Representative Don Davis (D-NC) as a Federal Champion for his leadership, public service, and commitment to finding solutions to challenges posed by flooding.

“Throughout my years of service on behalf of eastern North Carolina, I’ve dedicated myself to protecting our citizens and their livelihoods from the constant threats posed by hurricanes, tropical storms, and major floods,” said Rep. Davis. “I am grateful to collaborate with the American Flood Coalition as a Federal Champion, particularly on our shared priorities to bolster flood resilience solutions for our hardworking farmers, rural communities, and critical military installations.”

Rep. Davis joins 37 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions, those members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to stronger storms, more frequent flooding, and higher seas. Rep. Davis is the fifth Federal Champion from the Tarheel State, joining Sen. Thom Tillis, Rep. Greg Murphy, Rep. David Rouzer, and Rep. Virginia Foxx.

“Rep. Davis has shown tremendous leadership in helping Americans better prepare for, defend against, and recover from flooding, as a former Mayor, State Senator, First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force, and now as a member of Congress,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director of the American Flood Coalition. “As communities in North Carolina face the impacts of flooding both on the coast and inland, we’re excited to welcome him as a Federal Champion.”

Hailing from Snow Hill, Rep. Davis saw firsthand the effects of Hurricanes Matthew and Florence, which upended communities and severely damaged homes and critical infrastructure. As a State Senator, he supported the 2021 North Carolina budget, which made the largest flood mitigation investment in state history.

“As a North Carolinian, I appreciate Rep. Don Davis’ longstanding leadership on flood resilience dating from his work at the local, state, and now at the Congressional level,” said Tony McEwen, Carolinas Director, American Flood Coalition. “His bipartisan approach on flood policy has and will enhance public safety and save taxpayer resources.”

As Vice Ranking Member of the House Agriculture Committee in the 118th Congress, Rep. Davis introduced bipartisan legislation to help farmers and rural communities leverage forward-looking data, take on smart planning efforts, and adopt a watershed-informed approach to prepare for and recover from flood disasters. As a veteran and member of the House Armed Services Committee, the Congressman is also an essential voice in ensuring U.S. military installations are resilient against the national security threats of flooding and extreme weather.
