American Flood Coalition Recognizes Representative Al Green as a Federal Champion
As Texas communities face higher seas, stronger storms, and more frequent flooding, Rep. Al Green commits to driving solutions to build resilience.
WASHINGTON, DC — April 3, 2023 — The American Flood Coalition today recognized Representative Al Green (D-TX) as a Federal Champion for his leadership, public service, and commitment to delivering swift responses and recovery funding to disasters like flooding.
“I saw firsthand the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and how the impacts can upend entire communities for years,” said Representative Green. “I am honored to be recognized as a Federal Champion by the American Flood Coalition, and I look forward to working together to drive further awareness and action on flood resilience.”
Rep. Green joins 31 bipartisan AFC Federal Champions – the members of Congress dedicated to advancing solutions to stronger storms, more frequent flooding, and rising seas. Rep. Green is Texas’s fourth Federal Champion, joining Reps. Dan Crenshaw, Lizzie Fletcher, and Michael Burgess, M.D, from the Lone Star State.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Representative Green as a Federal Champion given his long history of helping Houston prepare for and recover from major storms and flooding,” said Melissa Roberts, AFC’s Executive Director. “His ongoing leadership to reform federal post-disaster recovery processes and to invest in flood resilient infrastructure projects will benefit all Houstonians and the countless communities on the front lines of flooding.”
As a senior member of the House Committee on Financial Services, Rep. Green has led efforts to strengthen long-term disaster recovery programs so that communities can obtain relief and rebuild with greater resilience in the wake of major storms. He was also a strong supporter of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which provides billions of dollars for programs to harden at-risk transportation, coastal, and other critical infrastructure in Texas and across the country.
