Susan Lyons is a Charleston resident who chairs the steering committee of Groundswell!, a grassroots flooding advocacy group. Lyons helped to found Groundswell! in 2017, after Irma flooded many Charleston homes for the third year in a row. She has witnessed the rise in flooding in her own home and neighborhood on the west side of Charleston’s peninsula. She founded Groundswell! to encourage action by city officials, and her efforts have led the City of Charleston to identify flooding as an official priority, consider making needed drainage improvements, and become more responsive to residents’ flooding concerns. She recently moderated an election debate between candidates for the Statehouse, sponsored by Groundswell! exclusively on the issue of flooding. Lyons and the rest of Groundswell! continue to give voice to flooded homeowners, promote education on the issue, and urge the city to act.
