Zach Nunn

Congressman, Iowa

Representative Zach Nunn represents the 3rd district of Iowa in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Mr. Nunn is a sixth generation Iowan from the Des Moines area. He grew up on his family’s farm before studying at Drake University in Des Moines. Mr. Nunn went on to earn a M.A. from the Air Command and Staff College and the University of Cambridge.

Mr. Nunn was elected to the Iowa State House of Representatives in 2015 and the Iowa State Senate in 2019.

Mr. Nunn served for nearly two decades in the United States Air Force, participating in combat missions in China and Russia as an airborne intelligence officer. After 9/11, he deployed three times to the Middle East. He currently serves as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Before running for Congress, he oversaw the White House’s National Security Council’s efforts as Director of Cybersecurity, defending against cyberattacks from adversaries abroad.

In the 118th Congress, Representative Nunn serves on the House Financial Services and Agriculture Committees, both of which have jurisdiction over flooding, resilience, and adaptation policy.

Iowa’s third congressional district includes the city of Des Moines and areas south and west to the Missouri border. The region has experienced catastrophic flooding, including impacts from the “Great Flood” of 1993, which resulted in $15 billion in damages across the Midwest, required thousands of Iowans to be evacuated from their homes, and left 250,000 without water in the state. More recently, in 2018, the Des Moines area experienced severe weather that led to major flash flooding with nine inches of rain in four hours. Dozens of vehicles were abandoned in roadways due to heavy rain and storms. In 2019, the Missouri River Valley in western Iowa suffered 30 levee failures, flooding roads and isolating towns and communities.

Mr. Nunn lives in Boudrant, Iowa, with his wife Kelly and six children.
