The City of South Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, in the Miami metropolitan area, with a population of approximately 12,500.
In 2001 the City was awarded the All-America City Award, which is given by the National Civic League annually to ten cities in the United States. This award is the oldest community recognition program in the nation and recognizes communities whose citizens’ work together to identify and tackle community-wide challenges and achieve uncommon results.
South Miami is a mile inland from Biscayne Bay, but salt water intrusion has reached the corner of the City. Residential septic systems are threatened by sea level rise, and the City has two canal systems that are vulnerable to storm surge. To combat the effects of rising waters, the city has detailed flood zone information for its residents, a stormwater managements master plan, is part of the National Flood Insurance Program, and has joined the American Flood Coalition.
