Smart Home America

Resilience Organization

Smart Home America (SmartHomeAmerica.org) is a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization based in Mobile, Alabama. The company  promotes stronger construction methods, improved building codes, and policies that create resilient communities. The mission of Smart Home America is based on the idea that providing people the knowledge and resources they need to make smart, informed decisions will strengthen their homes, secure their future, and improve their lives.

After Hurricanes Ivan and Katrina, Smart Home America created the first viable market for the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) FORTIFIED resilient construction standard, beginning in Coastal Alabama and Mississippi. FORTIFIED is a comprehensive, all-hazard standard intended for small and mid-sized businesses that are planning to build new facilities and enhance their ability to withstand natural hazards. Now, Alabama leads the nation in FORTIFIED designations.

FORTIFIED combined with floodplain management best practices, hazard mitigation, and insurance education create the pillars of Smart Home America’s smart approach to building resilience. A smart home begins with informed decisions.
