Representative Michael Burgess, M.D., represented the 26th district of Texas in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Raised in Denton, Dr. Burgess studied at North Texas State University, now the University of North Texas. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Houston before completing his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Parkland Hospital in Dallas. Dr. Burgess also holds a master’s degree in medical management from the University of Texas at Dallas.
Dr. Burgess practiced medicine for nearly three decades before being elected to Congress in 2003. He currently serves on House Committees on Energy and Commerce; Rules; as well as Budget.
Texas’s 26th district includes FEMA’s Region VI Headquarters, which serves Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico. The district is also home to the Denton Mobile Emergency Response Support Detachment. Recognizing these critical stakeholders as well as the need for public education on disasters, Representative Burgess convenes an annual summit and fair on emergency preparedness. The district has also experienced destructive flooding, including in 2015, when the Ray Roberts, Grapevine, and Lewisville Lakes flooded after sudden, heavy rainfall. The flooding caused widespread damage and led to at least 70 swift-water rescues throughout the area.
Dr. Burgess and his wife Laura have been married for more than 45 years. They have three children and two grandchildren.
