Matt Wechtel serves as Chair of the Madison County Board of Commissioners, where he is leading with a forward-looking vision for infrastructure, economic vitality, and community resilience. First elected as a Commissioner in 2024 and now entrusted with the role of Chair, Matt has outlined a strategic agenda that prioritizes transformational projects for the county.
At the top of his priorities is the Highway 213 infrastructure initiative, which will link Marshall and Mars Hill with new water and sewer systems, and potentially natural gas, transforming the corridor into an engine of economic growth. He is also overseeing plans for the construction of a new county courthouse, addressing the aging and limited 1908 facility while ensuring modern functionality for county government. Beyond infrastructure, Matt is focused on expanding economic development opportunities, strengthening workforce initiatives, and improving county asset management. He is also advancing healthcare access through a growing partnership with AdventHealth, which could bring new urgent care, radiology, dialysis, and mental health services to Madison County. In addition, Matt is championing improvements to the county’s EMS facilities and supporting thoughtful regulation around commercial event venues to balance growth with quality of life.
With a career background in insurance and decades of community service, Matt brings a steady, solutions-oriented approach to his role. His leadership reflects a deep commitment to preserving Madison County’s unique character while preparing the community for long-term resilience and opportunity.
