Katie Britt represents the state of Alabama in the U.S. Senate.
Born and raised in Enterprise, Alabama, Mrs. Britt earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Juris Doctor from The University of Alabama. Before being elected to the Senate in 2022, she practiced law, served as Chief of Staff to former U.S. Senator Richard Shelby, and was the first woman to lead the Business Council of Alabama as its President and CEO.
In the 119th Congress, Senator Britt chairs the Senate Appropriations Committee’s Subcommittee on Homeland Security, which has primary jurisdiction over FEMA’s budget and the Department of Homeland Security’s disaster preparedness and response programs. She also serves on the committee’s Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, which oversees the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Civil Works program. As a member of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Senator Britt oversees the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant for Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) program.
Since joining the Senate, Senator Britt has championed efforts to strengthen the nation’s flood forecasting infrastructure, including efforts to designate the National Water Center at The University of Alabama as NOAA’s primary water research hub. She has also been a leading advocate for Atlas 15, NOAA’s forthcoming nationwide precipitation dataset that will modernize rainfall standards that engineers and planners rely on to build flood-resilient infrastructure.
Senator Britt has also prioritized reforming the federal disaster recovery system to be more efficient and accountable, while securing much-needed resources for communities impacted by hurricanes and major floods, as well as investments to strengthen flood resilience along Alabama’s Gulf Coast.
Senator Britt and her husband, Wesley, live in Montgomery, Alabama, with their children, Bennett and Ridgeway.
