Historic Charleston Foundation is an advocacy organization advancing the mission of historic preservation across the Charleston region. As preservation has evolved beyond a movement to simply save historic buildings, the Foundation has broadened its scope into balancing the needs of modern society with protecting the unique character of our historic communities.
Communities must be vibrant to survive. With vibrancy comes inevitable growth and development. Our renewed mission is to address the growth pressures of an expanding region – mobility and transportation, flooding, development and zoning, tourism– while protecting the architecture and cultural character of Charleston and its Lowcountry environs.
Three years of unprecedented flooding coupled with an indisputable rise in sea level, has led Historic Charleston Foundation to identify flooding as a major threat to the preservation and livability of Charleston. The Foundation has been a leading voice on this complex issue, engaging in local advocacy work to ensure the development of innovative stormwater management plans and engaging with experts from around the world who fundamentally understand how to live with water.
Whether it’s by presenting at the acclaimed Keeping History Above Water conferences, connecting local residents with flood damage mitigation experts and resources, or supporting local homeowners in elevating their houses to escape chronic flooding, the Foundation will remain committed to the development of a strategy which results in a course of ACTION that will protect Charleston’s neighborhoods and businesses.
