Mayor Greg Cummings was elected as mayor of Pembroke in 2016 and re-elected in 2019. Previous to becoming Mayor of Pembroke, Mayor Cummings has worked as a well respected and successful Economic Development Director for his home county of Robeson and also served on the Pembroke Town Council from 1991-2011.
The town has long-term efforts underway to mitigate flooding throughout the town. In an effort to reduce the loss of life and property damage by lessening the impact of future disasters, Pembroke hosted FEMA flood mitigation specialists to answer questions from residents. The town also participates in the National Flood Insurance Program. Pembroke has received over $1,000,000 for stormwater improvements through the Disaster Recovery Grant Program administered by the Golden LEAF Foundation. The town also partnered with the University of North Carolina at Pembroke to conduct a hydrologic study and report which has led to Pembroke being awarded multiple stormwater improvement grants. Pembroke also secured over $6.6 million from the Economic Development Administration Hurricane Florence Disaster Recovery Fund to protect local industry from future major storm events.
