Fairmont is located in the southern part of Robeson County. The town has a population of 2,623, but the businesses and industries of the town actually draw upon a population between 25,000 and 30,000 from the communities surrounding the town. The population is a uniquely tri-racial mix of the African American, Native American and Caucasian backgrounds.
After Hurricane Matthew impacted the Town five years ago, Fairmont has been looking at opportunities to reduce flooding and the effects of sea level rise. Fairmont has several strong and active civic organizations. They also provide funding for the local volunteer fire departments and rescue squad, set up blood drives, and raise monies for the less fortunate. Volunteerism is a committed way of life for Fairmont citizens.
