Joining the [coalition] is just another example of the Town’s commitment to protecting our community from flooding and damage that would result from higher sea levels. We look forward to working with the [coalition] to enhance and strengthen our efforts.
Cutler Bay is an incorporated Town located at the southern tip of Florida, in Miami-Dade County, just west of Biscayne Bay. The Town was founded in 2005 and has a population of approximately 45,000.
Given the limestone bedrock beneath the majority of the state, sea level rise poses a unique threat to all of Florida, as it allows rising sea water to infiltrate sewage systems and threaten groundwater supplies via salt water intrusion. The coastal geographic location Cutler Bay has adds to the vulnerability the Town faces, making the impact of sea level rise that much worse.
The Cutler Bay Town Council and staff have been working diligently with local, state and federal agencies to improve resiliency and to further develop mitigation strategies. In 2015 the Town adopted the Cutler Bay Floodplain Mitigation Plan, a long-term strategy to reduce the community’s vulnerability to natural disasters. During a council meeting on May 16, 2018, the Town Council took a further step to fight sea level rise and adopted a resolution to join the coalition.
