Coronado

San Diego County, California

The City of Coronado is a small beach community with an island feel. Incorporated in 1890, Coronado offers a rich history and exceptional community assets in a village atmosphere.

Bounded by the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay, Coronado is accessible by the sweeping two-mile long San Diego-Coronado Bridge and scenic Silver Strand State Highway. The city’s unique location on a narrow peninsula at the southwestern edge of San Diego County helped establish Coronado as a popular residential-resort community.

The City is home to the Victorian-era Hotel del Coronado, an abundance of historic homes, a bustling downtown shopping and dining district, and numerous recreational amenities, including an 18-hole golf course, several marinas, a regional bike path, and a wide and sandy public beach which is consistently named a Top 10 U.S. beach. Military and tourism are the City’s two major industries. The U.S. Navy, with three bases in the City, has a strong and proud presence in Coronado, home of naval aviation. Coronado has 24,417 residents and a substantial daytime tourist population.

Given its location nearly surrounded by water, Coronado has its share of mild flooding from both the natural ocean tide and storm surge. Flooding could impact critical infrastructure, residential neighborhoods and businesses, sensitive and protected areas, and facilities around town. In joining the American Flood Coalition, the City of Coronado is demonstrating its commitment to addressing flooding and sea level rise and so that generations can continue to enjoy the City’s vibrant community, historic properties, and special atmosphere for years to come.
