Cerro Gordo is a town in Columbus County, North Carolina, United States. Cerro Gordo, meaning ‘fat hill,’ describes its slightly higher elevation than the rest of Columbus County, although it is in the coastal plain region of North Carolina. The majority of its land is devoted to crops, cows, and hog houses.
Flooding from Hurricane Matthew impacted the Town of Cerro Gordo’s Town Hall and other nearby homes and businesses. Due to mold, mildew, and unsafe conditions, the building has been condemned. Thankfully, funding has been available from FEMA is inadequate to replace the building and mitigate future flooding. This Golden LEAF grant will fund design, engineering, and construction of a replacement town hall that will be elevated to avoid future flooding. Cerro Gordo looks forward to working with the American Flood Coalition on ways to reduce the impacts of flooding and sea level rise.
