Robert C. “Bobby” Scott is a Representative from Virginia. Prior to serving in the House of Representatives, he served in the Virginia House of Delegates and in the Senate of Virginia.
During his tenure in the Virginia General Assembly, Congressman Scott successfully sponsored laws critical to Virginians in education, employment, health care, social services, economic development, crime prevention and consumer protection. Prior to serving in Congress, Scott served 15 years in the Virginia General Assembly where he focused his legislative efforts on creating jobs, increasing access to affordable healthcare, improving education and economic opportunities, promoting evidence-based crime prevention strategies, and enhancing consumer protections. Prior to becoming a politician, he served in the National Guard and the U.S. Army Reserve.
Congressman Scott made history by becoming the first African-American elected to Congress from Virginia since the Reconstruction-era. Because his maternal grandfather immigrated from the Philippines during the Spanish-American War, Bobby also has the distinction of being the first voting member of Congress with Filipino ancestry.
Scott currently serves as the Chairman of the Committee on Education and Labor. He previously served on the Committee for the Judiciary and Subcommittees on Health, Employment, Labor, and Pensions; Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education; Constitution and Civil Justice; Crime, Terrorism, Homeland Security, and Investigations (Ranking Member); and the Constitution. Congressman Scott also currently sits on the Committee on the Budget. His is the former Chairman and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security on the House Judiciary Committee.
In 2010, The Hill, a Capitol Hill newspaper, recognized Congressman Scott as one of the 25 hardest working Members of Congress. The Hill later recognized him in 2012 as one of Capitol Hill’s 50 most beautiful people.
Congressman Scott received his B.A. in Government from Harvard College and obtained his J.D. from Boston College Law School.
