Appreciate the American Flood Coalition recognizing my efforts to restore and protect Louisiana’s coastline. Louisianans know the importance of a resilient coastline to protect families, businesses, and our way of life. Our work continues.
Growing up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Cassidy studied at Louisiana State University where he earned a B.A. in biochemistry in 1979 and his medical degree in 1983. After graduation, Dr. Cassidy began his career as a physician at the Earl K. Long Medical Center in Baton Rouge. He went on to co-found the Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic in 2000, which offered free dental and healthcare to uninsured residents. In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, he led a group of healthcare volunteers in providing emergency medical services to hurricane evacuees.
In 2006, Dr. Cassidy was elected to the Louisiana State Senate, where he served for two years. He was elected to represent the greater Baton Rouge area in the U.S. House of Representatives in 2008 and served until his election to the U.S. Senate in 2014.
In the 117th Congress, Senator Cassidy sits on the Senate Committees on Veterans’ Affairs, Energy and Natural Resources, Finance, and Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions.
Senator Cassidy has been a vocal proponent for projects that restore Louisiana’s coastline and help protect residents from major storms and disasters. An author and lead negotiator of the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, Senator Cassidy secured approximately $46 billion in flood resilience and recovery programs including FEMA flood mitigation assistance, STORM Act disaster revolving loan funds, NOAA flood mapping, modeling, and coastal restoration programs, and US Army Corps of Engineers’ infrastructure.
Cassidy met his wife, Laura, a surgeon, during his residency. The couple have three children.
