Former Congressman Al Lawson served all or parts of eight north Florida counties spanning from Gadsden in the west to Duval in the east, in the United States House of Representatives. Previously, Lawson served the people of Florida for 28 years in the state legislature, rising to the rank of “Dean of the Senate” prior to his election to Congress. During his years in the Legislature, he sponsored legislation to create Preservation 2000, the forerunner to Florida Forever, which has purchased more than 2.5 million acres of environmentally sensitive land over the years. He also fought for legislation to put environmental education in the Florida curriculum and protect the Apalachicola Bay.
Rep. Lawson wass on the House Financial Services and Agriculture committees. As a licensed insurance and financial counselor, Rep. Lawson has helped working families find the right solutions to meeting their long-term goals. Following historic flooding in Jacksonville, Fla. caused by Hurricane Michael, Rep. Lawson proposed action that provided relief for much of Jacksonville’s propensity toward river-related flooding.
Rep. Lawson received his B.S from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU), his master’s degree in Public Administration from Florida State University (FSU), and he completed his coursework for a Ph.D. in Public Administration.
