Thom Tillis

Senator, North Carolina

Having seen the devastating human and economic damage from major floods in our state first hand, I remain committed to advancing common sense steps that protect North Carolinians now and into the future.

Senator Thom Tillis represents North Carolina in the U.S. Senate.

One of five siblings, Tillis received a B.S. in technology management from the University of Maryland University College. He later served as a senior executive at PricewaterhouseCoopers and IBM.

Tillis began his public service as PTA president of his daughter’s high school and as a member of the Town of Cornelius Board of Commissioners. In 2006, he was elected to the North Carolina General Assembly, where he served as Speaker of the House from 2011 to 2014, before being elected to the U.S. Senate in 2014 and winning a second term in 2020.

Senator Tillis is a member of the Senate Armed Services, Veterans’ Affairs, Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, and Judiciary Committees.

Senator Tillis has been a vocal proponent for protecting North Carolinians from major storms while recovering stronger in their wake. Following devastation from Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and Hurricane Florence in 2018, he led efforts to respond and rebuild, securing millions in federal funding for communities across North Carolina.

A member of the bipartisan group of Senators who successfully negotiated the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, Senator Tillis supported provisions to enhance flood resilience across transportation and water systems, while investing in coastal resilience and flood mitigation projects through the US Army Corps of Engineers and FEMA. He has also championed proposals to simplify and expedite post-disaster recovery and efforts to modernize federal data to better understand and manage flood risk.

Tillis lives with his wife Susan in Huntersville, North Carolina. They are the proud parents of two grown children and grandparents to two granddaughters.
