Our communities have experienced severe storms and dangerous flooding, and as many continue to work to provide the resources and recovery services for those affected by this flooding, as leaders we want to continue to explore solutions and ways to mitigate flooding while continuing to ask for federal funding and resources to build resilient communities.
Mayor Olivia Dawson was elected Mayor of the Town of Burgaw in Nov 2021, the county seat of Pender County, NC with a population of around 4,000.
Burgaw continues to work on ways to mitigate its flooding issues and improve its vulnerability, currently working through the N.C. Resilient Coastal Communities Program to assess the risks and hazards associated with flooding identifying projects to increase resillency.
Burgaw has participated in a multi-jurisdictional Plan developed by Pender County, including the assessment of flooding during hurricanes and natural disasters.
To mitigate the impacts of flooding, the town of Burgaw has implemented various measures, including stormwater management systems, drainage improvements, and floodplain management regulations. However, flooding remains a persistent challenge for the community, and ongoing efforts are needed to manage and mitigate its impacts effectively.
