Jackie Newton

Commissioner of Pender County, NC

I appreciate AFC’s emphasis on rebuilding, not the same, but better and smarter. As well, I value the assistance that AFC is providing in helping communities find the resources to do so.

Commissioner Jackie Newton was elected as a Pender County commissioner in 2016. Commissioner Newton co-chairs the Eastern N.C. Disaster Recovery and Resiliency Alliance with Wilmington Mayor Saffo. In that role, she has worked to elevate the concerns of eastern North Carolina in partnership with AFC.

Pender County is a county in North Carolina with a population of over 60,000. The county’s ongoing efforts to improve flood resiliency include the Resilient Redevelopment Plan, Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance, Disaster Relief Hazard Mitigation Plan, hiring of a Floodplain Administrator, development of the Pender County Long Term Recovery Group, participation in the Eastern N.C. Disaster Recovery and Resiliency Alliance, and publishing the Pender County Flood Awareness Citizen’s Guide. In 2016, Pender County joined New Hanover and Brunswick to finalize the Southeastern N.C. Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. Pender County has secured $6.5 million through FEMA’s Hazard Mitigation Grant Program, and in 2021, the county became a Community Rating System (CRS) community.
