Phil Newland

Marketing & Communications Director

Phil is the Marketing & Communications Director at the American Flood Coalition, where he oversees communications strategy and shapes the narrative around how flooding is understood by the media, policymakers, and the general public. 

Phil has over twelve years of communications experience, including public relations, public affairs and advocacy, marketing, and reputation management. Most recently, he founded and led his own communications firm, Sur Communications. Prior to this, he led strategic planning and advocacy campaigns for clients across the sustainable energy, health care, insurance, and transportation industries for a boutique communications firm. Before this, Phil led communications efforts for the Republic of Fiji and COP23, the global climate conference while at Qorvis MSL, part of Publicis Groupe.

Phil holds bachelor’s degrees in history and Spanish from Indiana University.
