The Wallops Island Regional Alliance is a non-profit organization with a mission to enhance and protect Federal and Defense assets on the Eastern Shore and to be supportive of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) initiatives throughout the region. WIRA has over 250 members including a range of business leaders from across Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia; as well as corporate sponsors representing a range of businesses, institutions, and government agencies.
WIRA is based in Wallops Island, which is part of Virginia’s Barrier Islands system, and located just south of Maryland. The region is home to a range of aeronautics and technology installations, organizations and businesses. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Wallops Flight Facility, along with the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport, a commercial space launch facility, are both located on Wallops Island, along with a U.S. Navy installation. Beach renourishment, as well as a 3-mile long sea wall near the island’s launch facilities, are used to reduce the impacts of coastal storms and sea level rise.
