The city’s beautiful and sought after location also makes it vulnerable to sea level rise and flooding. Some Cooper City residents live in a Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA), which is a zone where flooding may occur in the event of a heavy rainfall, a hurricane or other natural disaster. Flood insurance is available to all residents as a result of the city’s participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The city also participates in the Community Rating System (CRS) and has a current rating of Class 7.
Cooper City is proactive in its efforts to educate the community on flood risk and, being part of Broward County, the town benefits from county efforts, such as the Southeast Florida Regional Climate Change Compact, which outlines an ongoing collaborative effort among the Compact Counties to foster sustainability and climate resilience at a regional scale. Broward County is tackling the issue of sea level rise head-on, with action plans and many resources for residents within its cities and towns.
