Carlos Curbelo Joins American Flood Coalition Executive Advisory Board
Former Congressman and changemaker has joined the coalition’s board to help ignite action on flooding and sea level rise issues.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: WASHINGTON, D.C., FEBRUARY 20, 2019
The American Flood Coalition is pleased to announce that Carlos Curbelo, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019, has joined its executive advisory board. Curbelo has long-standing track record of working on flooding and sea level rise issues, having served a district that is one of the country’s most at-risk from sea level rise and flooding.
“The American Flood Coalition is doing the important work of building a national network of local leaders advocating for sober solutions to the unique challenges faced by coastal communities,” Curbelo said. “While in Congress I witnessed firsthand the effectiveness of AFC’s efforts, and now I look forward to supporting this important cause through my participation on the board.”
During his time in Congress, Curbelo fought to protect communities in Monroe County and parts of Miami-Dade County as well as important natural resources like the Everglades, Biscayne National Park, and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. He created and co-chaired the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus and co-sponsored an effort to direct executive agencies, including military departments, to reduce the risk of flood losses, minimize flood impacts, and restore and preserve natural floodplains. He also co-sponsored a bill to authorize tax credits for those impacted by hurricanes Harvey, Maria, and Irma and was one of the early founding members of the American Flood Coalition.
“We are very excited to have Mr. Curbelo as the newest member of our executive advisory board,” said Melissa Roberts, Executive Director of the American Flood Coalition. “He holds a unique perspective from representing a district and a state that is heavily impacted by flooding and sea level rise and as a champion in forging bipartisan compromise across a range of consequential topics.”
Curbelo becomes the 6th to join the organization’s executive advisory board, which includes Jay Faison, philanthropist and founder of ClearPath; Lawrence Linden, founder and Trustee of Linden Trust for Conservation; Michelle Moore, former Senior Advisor to the White House Office of Management and Budget and CEO of Groundswell, Inc.; Walter Revell, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Revell Investments International; and MG (R) Michael Walsh, former Deputy Commanding General of Civil and Emergency Operations for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
