Senator Chuck Grassley represents the state of Iowa in the U.S. Senate.
Born in Butler County, Senator Grassley was raised on a farm and graduated from New Hartford Community High School. He went on to attend the University of Northern Iowa, where he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science.
After graduation, Senator Grassley worked in factories as a sheet metal shearer and an assembly line worker while farming. He also taught government courses as an adjunct professor.
From 1958–1974, Senator Grassley represented parts of Butler County in the Iowa state legislature. In 1974, he was elected to Congress to serve Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, and in 1980, he was elected to the U.S. Senate. He is the longest serving senator in Iowa’s history.
In the 118th Congress, Senator Grassley serves as the Ranking Member of the Senate Budget Committee. He also serves on the Senate Finance Committee, Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, and Senate Judiciary Committee.
Senator Grassley championed the bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act and has shepherded significant federal investments from the law toward Iowa projects and communities. He also helped secure $117 million in federal funding from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Long-Term Disaster Recovery Investment Program to support recovery in Cedar Rapids following catastrophic flooding in 2008.
Senator Grassley lives on his farm in New Hartford, Iowa, with his wife of seventy years, Barbara.
